It is usefull for user to look preview before choose this template. We can see when we move cursor at template list. We will see thumbnail. It is easy way to create thumbnail. We just capture screen. Create thumbnail named "template_thumbnail.png". This file must have dimension 206 X 150 px. Example bellow: 
Place within joomla/templates/mytemplate. When you open template manager, you will see like this:
